This famous assam laksa has been operating in Joo Hooi Coffee Shop for almost five decades; in recent years, they have moved to a new shoplot further down on the same Lebuh Keng Kwee. The broth here is lighter comparing to those other famous ones, but nonetheless it is one of the authentic version of Assam Laksa you can find in Penang.

The key element to a good bowl of spicy sour laksa lies within the fish broth.

This stall here prepares theirs with the mix of sardines and mackerels.

This place is one of the only few in Penang where you can still find chunky fish meat in the laksa broth.

The stall owner will bath the ingredients with the broth a couple more times before filling up with it and serve to your table.

If you came by Lebuh Keng Kwee to queue for the famous chendul, it’s hard to miss another crowd that is waiting around this laksa stall.

Asam Laksa is a spicy sour, fish and tamarind based soup.

Usually mackerel is used to prepare the fish broth; while there are also places which prepares them with a mix of mackerels and sardine.

After a couple hours of boiling, the fish meats disintegrates (and broken into small chunks) which will then become part of the final broth.

This dish is served with generous amount of finely sliced cucumbers, onions, red chilis, pineapples, lettuce, mint leaves, ginger flower, and thick rice noodles.

A spoonful of thick and sweet shrimp paste (hae ko) is added to further enhance the taste.
