Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) is one of the most commonly found item in Penang hawker centers; but not likely in a cafe setting.

Traditional Ikan Bakar with a modern twist

Located along Lorong Macalister, you'll find The Mermaid Cafe inside a corner shoplot; serving traditional Ikan Bakar with a modern twist of western-asian fusion.

This long famed cafe, is one of its kind in Penang.

And obviously, we have to pay a visit.

The moment you step into this place, you'll quickly notice yourself in a clean, cozy space that is properly setup for comfortable dining experience.

The man behind this place is Alex, a familar face if you've been to the Baa Baa Black Sheep cafe in Tanjung Bunga area.

On the menu, you'll find an extensive options of fish and seafood; with choices of sauce to pair with.

We went ahead for their signature sambal chili paste and immedietly find the pairing goes very well with our stingray and rice.

The stingray were also grilled crispy on the edges without losing the juiciness on its flesh.

Signature Chicken Chop

You'll also find a wide array of choices for main course when you're not up for seafood during your visit.

We find their signature chicken chop worth savouring although we'd have preferred the sides of chips instead of Okra (Lady's finger).

The carbonara is also worth a try if you're up for something creamier and much filling.
